Marlowe is a wide band of satin, folded back on itself and set off the shoulders. That fold is the whole design. Below it the bodice draws in with soft gathers at one side, then the satin follows the hip and thigh before it flares below the knee into a short plain train. No lace, no beading anywhere on it. The back is plain: the band crosses it, and a concealed zip runs down the spine. Two lines, really: the horizontal across the shoulders and the vertical to the floor. Nothing else competes for the eye, which is why it is the gown to choose for a pre-wedding shoot in strong light, where one fold across the shoulders reads from across a field.
